Guide Picks - Top 6 Picks of Historical Videos
Are you afraid you're going to choose a video that makes everyone in the room start to "check to make sure their eyelids are still working"? Well have no fear, I've chosen a few videos that will not only keep you awake, but also will keep you chatting about them for weeks to come.
1) 1900 House
What would it be like to live in the year 1900? Of course lots of things have changed, but do you realize how much? PBS selected a real family to live for three months as if it were 1900. Sometimes you'll laugh, sometimes you'll cry, and sometimes you'll be talking to the screen as the family learns the hard way about life at the beginning of the 20th century. This is one video you can watch over and over again - I certainly have.
2) Robert Ripley: Believe It Or Not!
Though I avidly watched the show "Believe It Or Not!" when I was young, I had no idea that Robert Ripley was such a fascinating man. Throughout the entire hour and a half of this biography, I was continually shocked and surprised - not by Ripley's findings but by the man himself.
3) Modern Marvels - The Empire State Building
How could man build something so tall? Almost halted because of the Great Depression, watch as men piece together the tallest building in the world, floor by painstaking floor. This fascinating hour length program will enthrall you.
4) Europa, Europa
Based on the true story of Solomon Perel, this movie is about a young Jewish boy who hides from the Nazis during World War II by trying to pass as a young German. Solomon must battle his teenage desires, hide his identity by gaining acceptance within the den of the enemy, as well as worry about his family. Though subtitled, it doesn't take away from the power of the film.
5) The Dish
The Dish is a delightful fictional (bust based on a true story) movie about an Australian satellite communications facility that was destined to be part of the 1969 landing of the first man on the moon. It's a fun look at one of the most historic moments of the 20th century.
6) Saving Private Ryan
Though most history buffs have probably already seen this, it is definitely worth watching a second time. The film is about a rescue mission during World War II to save the life of one man after it is learned that his three other brothers died in the war. However, it's not the story line that captures your interest, it's the very realistic battle scenes. Very gory, very realistic.
