World War I

The First World War, originally called the Great War, raged from 1914 to 1918. Mostly fought in western Europe in muddy, bloody trenches, WWI saw the introduction of the machine gun and poison gas into battle.
Christmas Truce of World War I
Something surprising occurred on the front for Christmas in 1914. In one of the truest acts of goodwill toward men, soldiers from both sides set aside their weapons and hatred and agreed to a Christmas truce.

The Red Baron
Baron Manfred von Richthofen was an extremely successful fighter pilot during World War I. Credited with shooting down 80 enemy aircraft and preferring to fly a brightly painted red airplane, Richthofen became popularly known as the Red Baron.
Sinking of the Lusitania
On May 7, 1915, the British passenger ship, the Lusitania, was sunk by a German U-boat. The high death toll shocked the world and the loss of American citizens swayed public opinion in the United States in favor of joining World War I.
